Is It Immoral to be Unhappy?

This morning I saw this provocative post by Auren Hoffman which asked, “Is it immoral to be unhappy?” He refers to the extremely lucky in the world (ie people who have the capacity to read blogs) as the “blessed class.”

Imagine an unblessed person. Imagine what they think when they see someone who is blessed, who has everything … yet is still unhappy. They’ll think you are crazy … insane … because you have it all.

So today at lunch I posed this question to some friends: “We have unlimited opportunities in this world and amazingly lucky, so guys, is it immoral to be unhappy?” The response came: “I think there’s a difference between being appreciative and being happy. I can be appreciative for what I have but not happy.” My response: “But are you truly appreciative if what you have can’t make you happy?” Hmm…

  • Great question. But I do think you can appreciate what you have without being happy. Even for we who have so much, it is hard not to have one’s heart break for those who have so little. And I might take that a step farther. It is hard to not see a connection between what we have–as good as it is–and, at least on some levels, what others don’t have. For all the talk of abundance mentalities, the more stuff I hoard for myself the less there is to go around. So again, I might appreciate what I have but be deeply saddened by the type of world it takes to produce it.

  • wow, what an original thought, no wonder your considered o so important. oh wait, no thats actually not an original thuoght at all, in fact in Dennis Prager’s “Happiness is a Serious Problem” his first chapter is entitled “Happiness is a Moral Obligation.” however just cause someone else had your idea, doesnt make it right. why should we be moraly obligated to apreciate what we have. and who is to say that happiness comes from things; i believe happiness comes from not wanting instead of getting what you want. or did you ever consider that the more oppurtunities we are given in life, maybe the harder it is for us to be happy. In fuedal times when it was impossible to rise in society people were forced to turn to faith, and faith is the window to infinite happiness since everything becomes god’s will and god is good. Now that we have oppurtunities to progress in society, we feel that we can achieve happiness by ourselves, making faith much harder and thus happiness much harder. ever think of that dict (i’d call you ben but i think dict sounds better)?
