My friend Gretchen Rubin, who writes the must-read Happiness Project blog, did a post today on topics to avoid in conversation if you don’t want to be a bore.
Unless you get a truly enthusiastic response from your interlocutor—which is possible—be very wary of recounting…
1. A dream.
2. The recent changes in your child’s nap schedule.
3. The route you took to get here.
4. An excellent meal you once had at a restaurant.
5. The latest additions to your wine cellar.
6. An account your last golf game.
7. The plot of a movie, play, or movie—in particular, the funny parts. What do these subjects have in common? The listener has nothing to add. He or she must just hear you describe your experience.
I’m always surprised and disappointed that more people don’t ignore sunk costs and abort the telling of a story when it’s clear it’s headed for the ground.
Note that Gretchen’s advice and most literature on conversation techniques apply more to the "dinner party with strangers" situation than a conversation with close friends.
Here’s my post on Keys to Great Conversations. Here are notes from the Junto discussion Chris Yeh and I led on the "Art of Storytelling in Business".

Belated (public) congratulations to Gretchen for selling her Happiness Project idea to HarperCollins for a forthcoming book. I will pre-order the moment it appears on Amazon!
The funny thing is that those very same long-winded bores who don’t know when to stop will think you a great conversationalist if you do listen to them, attentively.
I’ll listen to one boring story, unless they’re drunk or a complete idiot.
Then I short circuit their impulse to tell another one with my headless chicken story.
It works almost every time.
This was certainly thought provoking. Upon first read I found myself agreeing with your suggestion. However, after giving it some more thought it occurred to me that the list of topics could actually be interesting to the right audience. The listener might find a way to relate to any of the topics listed.
In fact, while I dread listening to most things that are sports related I know for a fact that if I told a story about my recent golf game (although quite unlikely) to some of the men I know they’d respond with great enthusiasm and recount their own stories at length. Similarly, recent changes in your child’s nap schedule could in fact be interesting to other mothers with similar experiences.
Isn’t it about knowing your audience?
I will keep in mind the option of aborting conversations that don’t get traction.
PS – I enjoy your blog tremendously.
“..my headless chicken story.”
Tell us, Vince 🙂
I am a father of four kids and at one point a scratch golfer and nothing drives me crazier than listening to parents talk about their kids or men gabbing about their round. Both topics create a complete blank stare from me.
It can frustrate me if somebody is telling a boring story that takes too long, they don’t realize it, and I’m in a situation in which I cannot politely get out of.
After a few minutes I usually realize that the next blabla episode will be really boring, after which I switch tactics, and instead of listening start asking questions. That way I’m holding the leach and can create the direction where the conversation is going to.
Works out usually, just takes some investment. Almost everybody has got something interesting to say, if you ask the right questions.
O.K., Shefaly, you asked for it.;-)
Back in the early ’70’s I was a hippie living in a communal household– we had a garden, rabbits, and chickens.
I don’t want to be accused of animal cruelty, so all I’ll say is that our rabbits saw God (hey, it was the 70’s).
We slaughtered our own chickens to eat because we believed it was better karma to do it yourself.
One day it was time to sacrifice one of the poor hens, so we put its neck on a chopping block (I don’t remember how) and chopped the head off.
The hippie chicks next door were watching this operation with horror and screamed (they liked chicken sandwiches, though).
It was done with one clean whack, and to our surprise and amusement the now headless chicken ran down the street.
So we guys chased it– it ran a good block or so, amazingly fast, before we caught it.
After the proper ceremonies we had a nice roast.
So that’s my headless chicken story (I can really tell it with more color at a party).
It took us a while to get back in the girls’ good graces.
I hope the same thing doesn’t happen here.;-)
It is totally about the people in the conversation and being comfortable tapping into the interests around the table. And if you don’t really know the people you rely on your speed and ability to get what you need in-game.
Regarding your list of things not to recount. Well, obviously anything that is simply recounting is going to suck listening to. You could be thoroughly recounting your experience of getting elected president of the united states and it would be boring as hell if you are bad at recounting. On the other hand, I’ve heard people recount seemingly really boring things, like their walk into work, and it can be one of the most hilarious stories I’ve ever heard. It really depends on the personality – this is not a function, it is very human and subjective. That’s why those books are good and all but you gotta test yourself out in the open waters, laddy.
Your fascination could be my idea of boredom. One way to gauge that could be to drop a hint and see if it evokes genuine curiosity from those around. If it does, it’s a tale worth telling and you’ll regale them if you are certain about your narrative ways.
Hey Ben! Thanks for the link and thanks for the good wishes about my book deal. I really appreciate it! be happy, Gretchen
This is why I avoid social situations–all of them. There are really no rules about what people will find interesting. If there were rules, I’d learn them and follow them and not be a social phobic.
Vince: Now _that_ is a great story!
I am sure it could be told with more masala (spice) at a party! Especially as the guests enjoy their canapés. Pity, good canapés rarely involve chicken! 🙂
Some not finding it enjoyable really would depend on the eeeuwww-factor of the audience as is evident from the hippie chicks in the story.
That said, I have to say in Ben’s list, I would still find it interesting to hear of a person’s dream. He/ she is sharing something very personal and reflective and may reveal more than he/ she planned to.
