The Bold, New Journey of College

From Gene Weingarten’s high school graduation speech:

My point is that the basic, all-purpose high school graduation speech is a lie. It’s a lie, because they don’t want to tell you the truth, which is that you are embarking on a bold, new journey to explore such things as whether it is physically possible to jam into a dormitory elevator the entire contents of the faculty lounge, including the sectional sofa.

I will comment much more on my upcoming college experience soon.

  • The short answer is yes, it is possible, though advisable is a whole other issue (I personally recommend lounge furniture from the student lounges, since it is a little closer and more mobile).

College is a great time where most of what you learn is from your peers and spans the range from ways to stretch one packet of ramen into two meals to the reality of maquilas on the U.S.-Mexico border. Never underestimate the value of what your classmates will teach you, even if it seems irrelevant at the time, since you’ll never know when you need it.
