Chris Rock, in his unique blend of wisdom, riffs on the difference between having a job and having a career:
He seems to define a job as something you hate and a career as something you love. I'm not sure that's the most useful distinction and definition. But, I love Rock's point that loving what you do causes you to always think there's not enough hours in the day. And his story about dropping out of the tenth grade and how he should have just dropped out of the second grade, while exaggerated, is perversely true.

This may be one of the best distinctions between jobs and careers I’ve ever heard.
I generally think of jobs as things you don’t see yourself doing forever; careers as something you wouldn’t mind calling your life’s word.
Generally, though, the reason you don’t want to do a job forever is because you hate it, or at least aren’t fully passionate about it. So it sort of does boil down to the love/hate relationship.

A career grants you freedom because you call the shots. You design and execute. In a job, you’re just the operator, a mere functional entity that exists because it’s got bills to pay.
