Lovely first half but can’t say it did not feel a bit contrived if the point was to show how our parents tolerate our incessant questioning but how we as adults don’t have enough patience with them in their old age… When the film began, I thought the father had dementia and hence the same question again and again. But if he is sane and with-it enough to go fetch his diary to make a point to his son, something in the message is instantly lost. :-/ Sorry.
For a moment, I thought it will lead to an insight along the lines of a quote by Richard Feynman:
“You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird… So let’s look at the bird and see what it’s doing — that’s what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.”
That was a beautiful film, my eyes welled up at the end.
