While the rest of the country’s streets are filled with protesters trumpeting abortion rights, gay marriage, Iraq war, foreign aid allocations, and other worldly issues, here in San Francisco we have our priorities straight: We want free wi-fi and we want it now! A grassroots, pro wi-fi protest was held today in front of City Hall. Free wireless internet is a right, not a privilege, and we won’t stop our activism until every boy and girl has access to clean, fresh, sanitary wi-fi.
This is funny! But then again to each community, their own battles to focus on.
On my last visit to San Francisco, a taxi driver told me that he earned exactly the same money now as he did 20 years ago, when he began driving a cab. He said now he had to bring his own coffee and sandwich from home, because he could not afford to buy from a cafe. He also said that he could not afford to be sick, because he earned more than the limit at which Medicaid could be accessed and he did not have enough money for a big enough health insurance. Dropping me off at the Caltrain station, he said, “Young lady, when you go back, kiss the grounds of your land of nationalised free healthcare for all; you have no idea what you have and what I would not give to have it here.”
A perfect cause.
Maslow believed that humans have the need to increase their intelligence and thereby chase knowledge. If he were alive, he would have categorized Wi-Fi as a sub-group under *Cognitive needs*, which is natural human need to learn, explore, discover, create, and perhaps even dissect to get a better understanding of the world around them – almost the equivalent of oxygen now.
Shefaly – Interesting story! I think that SF has universal health insurance now or they are planning to implement it really soon? Maybe that is why they are focusing on their lack of wi-fi.
